A small walk-in shower renovation made a big difference for this lovely elderly couple in the ensuite bathroom of their condo.

It was safe to say the old shower was on its very last legs, and an update was inevitable. The old tile and board were almost ready to fall right off the wall by themselves, and water was seeping down behind the exterior edges of the shower base.

Luckily the shower liner was still in tact, stopping water from flowing beneath the base to floors below. with a few small repairs to the shower base, proper board installation and waterproofing this shower’s infrastructure was given new life.

A few functional issues with the shower were also addressed prior to tiling. Given how dark and tight the old shower felt it was a no brainer to open up the entrance and ceiling header. Doing this added more room to enter the shower, and also provided the shower with a lot more light given the bigger opening and addition of the clear glass entry door.

Due to the lack of space in the shower, paired with added difficulty bending down due to older age, a double shelf niche was a necessity for storage of cleaning products.

Wanting to switch up the style of their shower to a more modern feel, the homeowners decided on a bigger 24” x 24” square tile. The homeowners also elected to choose a tile with both grey, brown, and gold vein pigments which gives the shower its modern look while still providing a feeling of contemporary warmth.

Instead of simply leaving the old drywall on the ceiling, that too was also removed, re-boarded, and tiled. This not only completed the look of the shower visually, but also provided a far better moisture barrier against water and steam.
