Featuring a unique configuration, this Kitchen renovation provided this Newmarket home with a beautiful new space along with lots of functional upgrades.

The two main objectives of this kitchen renovation were: 1) Open up the kitchen space to the living area to provide a bigger feel, and let more light in to the main floor.  2) Maximise kitchen counter space.

 

To address both these objectives without hindering the seating configuration of the TV / living room on the opposite side of the wall, a partial open concept entry way into the kitchen was created.  This new entry way into the kitchen meant a lot more space for multiple people to pass through at one time, created an open feel to the entire main floor, and created a much brighter main floor space by letting in light through the west facing kitchen bay window to other rooms.  By not fully opening this dividing wall, it also allowed for the perfect space that a television and fireplace could be wall mounted to for the living room area on the opposite side, providing the best layout for seating in this area of the home.  

 

three locations of appliances were adjusted in the kitchen to maximize the most amount of usable countertop space, with the stove, dishwasher, and fridge all being re located.  With the kitchen being small, the need for maximizing the most amount of cabinet storage possible was also a major objective.  Installing 40" tall upper cabinets that wrapped around the "L" shaped dividing wall made full use of the amount of cabinetry eligible wall space, and following this same route is the lower cabinetry and countertops. 

 

An unforseen challenge dealt with during this kitchen renovation came in the form of a very un-even sub floor due to the gradual sinking of one half of the building over time.  Although not a common problem dealt with to this extent, new floor tile was installed in a ramping fashion into the kitchen from the dining room providing a very gradual slope that would prevent against a constant bad tripping hazard.
