The transformation of this attic space into a storage room within this Newmarket Semi detached home provided a tremendous amount of value to its homeowners in an area of the home that was previously almost untouched.

In terms of renovations, storage areas within a home are a very commonly overlooked feature that bring a lot of convenience and value to a house. The kitchen, bathrooms, and entertainment rooms are always the first areas within a home to recieve a renovated update. Although generally not fancy looking areas, adequate storage rooms are extremely essential to any homeowner, and if the storage capability within a home is under developed it can leave a homeowner with no choice but to pay for using a storage unit. Doing this not only acts as a financial detriment, but also a possible big inconvenience when needing to retrieve items from an off property location.

A rarely thought of way to avoid these issues is to make full potential of every room in a home, in particular, the room in the attic space. A few simple lights and a receptacle were first added for some much needed light within the space before other work could begin. The existing insulation layer covering the ceiling joists of this space was spread around the surrounding areas of the attic that were not going to be utilized as storage space due to low head height. To avoid decreasing the thermal R-value of this new storage area, rigid foam insulation board was installed over top of the joists to provide a flat thermal insulating layer that had the ability for plywood to be installed over top.

This beautifully designed attic hatch ladder creates an access point into the attic space which falls perfectly in between the living room and dining room without the need to move furniture. The opening is big enough to fit almost any kind of item through the hatch, and the hatch door itself features an insulating layer within the door to prevent thermal loss from the floor below. The ladder is very strong holding up to 350 pounds, and with a spring loaded closing feature it makes this attic hatch extremely easy and convenient to close up after use.
